When Anjali Balwal opens the door to her peaceful Auckland home, she greets you not as a beauty queen but as someone whose life has seen both storms and sunshine. She is the first runner-up of Mrs India Worldwide 2025, yet her story begins far away from the spotlight, in the valleys of Jammu and Kashmir.

A journey that began in the mountains
Anjali grew up in a simple family in Jammu and later in Chandigarh. Her father served in the CBI, and her mother focused on giving the children a stable education. School holidays often meant visiting her grandparents in Jammu, a region that saw unrest during the 1990s.
“Those memories never fade,” she recalls softly. “Even weddings could turn into moments of fear. But that childhood also taught me courage.”
Chandigarh later became her base. After completing her studies there, she moved to New Zealand, where she continued her education in Christchurch before settling in Auckland.

Building dreams, losing one, and finding another
Life in New Zealand began with small steps and big hopes. Anjali worked, saved, and eventually opened her own restaurant on Shortland Street in Auckland. It became a popular spot that hosted well-known names such as Jacinda Ardern and Helen Clark. Then the pandemic hit.
“Closing the restaurant felt like losing a part of myself,” she says. “I had invested all my heart, but the universe had other plans.”
Instead of giving up, she turned to spirituality and faith. “I didn’t go to counselling. I prayed, stayed positive, and believed that whatever happens, happens for the best.”
A new beginning: Mrs India Worldwide 2025
The turning point came during a visit to India. A close friend, an Army Major who had once taken part in the same pageant, encouraged Anjali to apply. “I was shy, low on confidence, and unsure. My friend pushed me to try. My husband clicked a casual photo on his phone, and I sent it in.”
From more than 50,000 applicants, she received an email confirming her shortlisting. What followed were months of preparation, online grooming sessions at 3 a.m. New Zealand time, and a test of endurance.
“I was a wife, a mother, and a contestant. But once I decide something, I don’t quit.”
The result: First runner-up, Mrs India Worldwide 2025.

The people behind the crown
Anjali credits her parents, in-laws, and husband for standing beside her. Her husband left a secure job in the United States to move to New Zealand because she loved the country too much to leave.
“He washed dishes at my restaurant when staff called in sick,” she laughs. “That’s real partnership.”
Her in-laws, from a small town in Kashmir, once unfamiliar with glamorous events, now proudly share her videos. “I feel blessed every day to have such support.”
Giving back to the community
Anjali believes her story carries a purpose. She plans to work with women-focused NGOs and continue mentoring those who have lost confidence in themselves.
“Women are powerful. Sometimes we just need one push,” she says. “If my journey inspires even one person to rise again, that’s my real crown.”

A life shaped by courage
From the valleys of Jammu to the vibrant streets of Auckland, Anjali Balwal’s story is about second chances. It is a reminder that faith, family, and resilience can rebuild anything that falls apart.
As she says, smiling with quiet pride, “The crown is not the end. It’s the start of something beautiful.”
