Prime Minister Narendra Modi has begun a three-nation visit to Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand from 6 to 11 July 2026, with the tour expected to strengthen India’s partnerships across the Indo-Pacific region.
In his departure statement issued by the Press Information Bureau in Delhi on 6 July 2026, Prime Minister Modi said the visit would further strengthen India’s Act East Policy, MAHASAGAR Vision, and India’s commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific.
The visit includes high-level bilateral meetings, cultural engagements and major interactions with the Indian diaspora in all three countries.
Visit to Indonesia: 6 to 8 July
Prime Minister Modi’s first stop is Indonesia, where he is visiting at the invitation of the President of the Republic of Indonesia, H.E. Mr Prabowo Subianto.
India and Indonesia elevated their bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during Prime Minister Modi’s first visit to Indonesia in 2018. This visit is significant because it is his first bilateral visit to Indonesia since that elevation.
The visit also follows President Prabowo’s state visit to India, where he was the chief guest at India’s Republic Day celebrations on 26 January 2025.
Prime Minister Modi said India and Indonesia share strong civilisational and people-to-people ties. During his visit, he is expected to focus on deepening different aspects of the partnership between the two countries.
A key cultural moment of the visit will be Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the Prambanan Temple complex in Yogyakarta with President Prabowo. The temple complex is seen as a strong symbol of the historical and cultural links between India and Indonesia.
Prime Minister Modi will also interact with members of the Indian diaspora in Indonesia.
Australia Visit: Melbourne Engagements
After Indonesia, Prime Minister Modi will travel to Melbourne at the invitation of the Prime Minister of Australia, Hon. Anthony Albanese.
The Australia visit will focus on strengthening the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
According to the departure statement, Prime Minister Modi’s discussions with Prime Minister Albanese will cover several key areas, including:
- Defence and security
- Trade and investment
- Education and mobility
- People-to-people ties
- Emerging and critical technologies
- Sports and sports science
The visit also includes an interaction with the Indian diaspora in Melbourne. Prime Minister Modi described the Indian community as an important pillar of the India-Australia strategic partnership.
The Australia leg of the visit comes at a time when both countries are working to expand cooperation in the Indo-Pacific, trade, education and technology sectors.
New Zealand Visit: Auckland to Host PM Modi
From Melbourne, Prime Minister Modi will travel to Auckland, New Zealand, at the invitation of Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Christopher Luxon.
This visit is expected to build on the momentum created by Prime Minister Luxon’s visit to India in March 2025.
During his time in Auckland, Prime Minister Modi is expected to hold discussions with Prime Minister Luxon on ways to further strengthen economic, trade and commercial engagement between India and New Zealand.
The statement also referred to the signing of the Free Trade Agreement between India and New Zealand, noting that both countries have committed themselves to strengthening bilateral trade and commercial ties.
For New Zealand’s Indian community, the visit carries special importance. Prime Minister Modi said the Indian diaspora has made a significant contribution to India-New Zealand relations and that he looks forward to addressing a large gathering of the Indian community.
The Auckland event is expected to be one of the major highlights of the New Zealand leg of the visit.
Importance for the Indian Diaspora
Across Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand, the Indian diaspora is expected to play a visible role in the Prime Minister’s engagements.
Prime Minister Modi’s statement recognised the diaspora as an important bridge between India and partner countries. In New Zealand especially, the Indian community has grown significantly and has contributed across business, education, healthcare, technology, hospitality, public service and community life.
The Auckland community gathering is likely to attract strong interest from Indian New Zealanders and friends of India.
Strategic Message of the Visit
The three-nation tour has a wider strategic purpose.
Indonesia sits in the eastern Indian Ocean, Australia in the southern Indian Ocean, and New Zealand is an important Pacific partner. Together, the visits underline India’s growing engagement with the Indo-Pacific region.
Prime Minister Modi said the visit would support:
- India’s Act East Policy
- MAHASAGAR Vision
- A free and open Indo-Pacific
- Stronger regional partnerships
- Deeper people-to-people connections
The visit also comes as India continues to strengthen ties with countries that share interests in trade, security, education, technology and regional stability.
Why It Matters
Prime Minister Modi’s visit is not just a diplomatic tour. It brings together foreign policy, trade, culture and diaspora engagement.
For New Zealand, the visit is especially significant because it signals a stronger phase in India-New Zealand relations. With both countries looking to deepen trade and commercial ties, the Auckland visit could help open new opportunities for businesses, students, professionals and community organisations.
The real test will come after the visit, when both governments work to turn diplomatic momentum into practical outcomes.
For now, the message is clear: India is expanding its engagement across the Indo-Pacific, and New Zealand is an important part of that conversation.
