Who Can Apply for an OCI Card?

A person can apply for an OCI card if one of these conditions is true:

  • They were Indian citizens in the past.
  • Their parents were Indian citizens.
  • Their grandparents were Indian citizens.

If the person, their parents or their grandparents ever held a passport from Pakistan or Bangladesh, they cannot apply for the OCI card.

When Should You Renew the OCI Card?

Many people believe renewal is needed often. However, this is not correct. Renewal is needed only in these two cases:

  • The person receives a new passport after turning 20 years old.
  • The person changes personal details such as name or nationality.

Children under 20 do not need to renew the card for each new passport.

Do You Need the Old Passport With the U Visa?

No. You do not need the old passport with the U visa sticker. You only need:

  • A valid passport
  • A valid OCI card

Can Spouses and Children Apply?

Yes. There are clear rules for this.

  • A foreign spouse can apply if the marriage is registered and at least two years old.
  • Minor children can apply if one or both parents are or were Indian citizens.

If you want to add a spouse’s name to your OCI card, you must apply again for re issuance.

Who Cannot Apply for an OCI Card?

Some people cannot apply. These include:

  • Foreign military staff
  • Former military staff of another country
  • People restricted for security reasons
