Auckland, 18 September 2025 – Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has issued a timely reminder for prospective international students: apply early to avoid delays as the peak student visa season approaches.
With the academic year beginning in early 2026, INZ expects a surge of applications between October and March, the busiest period for visa processing. Students applying from overseas are strongly encouraged to submit their applications at least three months before their intended travel date.

Why Early Applications Matter
Submitting early increases the likelihood of receiving a decision before classes start. Late submissions not only risk missing the beginning of study programmes but also increase the chance of delays or declined applications if important documents are missing.
For those who apply very early – for example, six months ahead – INZ may issue an approval in principle, allowing students to finalise details such as proof of funds and tuition fee payments closer to the commencement of study.
Key Changes to Work Rights
From 3 November 2025, new rules will come into effect:
- Student visas granted on or after this date will allow students to work up to 25 hours per week during term time.
- Those whose visas are granted before 3 November will remain under the current 20-hour weekly limit unless they apply for a variation of conditions.
Enhanced Immigration Online System
INZ has also rolled out a redesigned Immigration Online system for student visa applications. The new platform provides:
- Tailored forms based on each applicant’s circumstances.
- Real-time updates and email notifications.
- Built-in guidance to help applicants avoid common mistakes.
While it may take slightly longer to complete, the additional upfront information is expected to reduce overall processing time.
Practical Tips for Students
- Ensure all required documents are uploaded with the application to avoid delays.
- Contact your education provider about a conditional Offer of Place if you’re waiting for final academic records.
- Check recent visa processing times regularly.
