New Zealand is reshaping its economy to focus on smart, sustainable growth built on science, nature, and innovation. The government’s Going for Growth strategy is leading this shift, aiming to move from selling bulk commodities to creating high-value, knowledge-based products that support better jobs and living standards for all New Zealanders.
From Commodities to Bio Innovation
For many years, New Zealand’s exports relied on volume. Milk, meat, and timber have carried the economy, but global pressures and climate challenges are forcing a rethink. The government now wants to create more value from what the country already has — its natural biodiversity, clean environment, and trusted reputation.
The plan supports a bio-circular economy, where industries create less waste and lower emissions while earning more from high-quality exports. Research funded by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) focuses on how to grow the economy and protect the environment at the same time.
The Mānuka Honey Success Story
The growth of Mānuka honey shows what is possible. Once a niche product, it is now worth $420 million a year, up from $187 million in 2014. The turning point came when scientists proved its health benefits and marketers built global trust through certifications such as Unique Mānuka Factor (UMF) and Methylglyoxal (MGO) ratings.
The lesson is clear. When science, quality control, and smart branding come together, New Zealand can turn natural resources into premium global exports. The government now plans to apply the same model to other areas like pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and health foods.
Investing in the Bio Future
To make this vision real, new funding has been launched to support research, discovery, and innovation.

One example is the Kawakawa research project, where scientists and Māori enterprises are working together to study the plant’s health benefits. Supported by the Liggins Institute and Wakatū Incorporation, the project aims to create a functional beverage for export to Asian markets. It blends traditional Māori knowledge with modern science and shows how cultural respect and innovation can go hand in hand.
Building Ethical and Sustainable Exports
New Zealand’s reputation for purity and integrity gives its products a strong edge. Strict certification through agencies such as BioGro, AsureQuality, and the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) ensures every bio-based export meets the highest global standards.
At the same time, respect for Māori knowledge and rights is central. The government is using guidelines like He Tohu Ārahi to ensure that projects involving native species follow ethical standards, include benefit sharing, and respect Māori as kaitiaki (guardians). This protects cultural integrity and strengthens trust in New Zealand’s story of authenticity and fairness.
Global Opportunities
To grow the bioeconomy faster, New Zealand is encouraging partnerships with large international companies, especially in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and biotechnology sectors. These collaborations bring in investment, research expertise, and access to major markets.
Asia remains a key focus for high-value exports such as nutraceuticals and functional foods. The government is building stronger connections through trade agreements with Australia and participation in networks like BioNet Asia Pacific, which open doors to regional collaboration and faster market entry.

The government’s goal is to turn New Zealand’s natural strengths into long-term economic power. The Mānuka honey model proves that scientific validation, cultural respect, and quality assurance can turn small industries into global success stories.
