What is Rudrabhishek Maha Pooja

Rudrabhishek is a sacred worship of Lord Shiva where the Shivling is bathed with pure offerings like water, milk, honey, ghee, curd, sugar, bilva leaves, and sacred herbs while chanting Vedic mantras from the Shri Rudram. “Maha” indicates a collective, expanded form performed together by many devotees. The core purpose is to invoke the grace of Shiva as Rudra, the remover of sorrow and negativity, and to pray for inner peace, strength, clarity, and well-being for all.

Why do we do it

  • To purify mind and environment through mantra, faith, and discipline
  • To cultivate qualities of fearlessness, compassion, and self-control
  • To offer gratitude to nature and the five elements through abhishekam
  • To seek blessings for family harmony, right decision-making, and progress on the spiritual path

  • Abhishek symbolizes surrender. As we pour offerings, we let go of ego, anger, and past burdens
  • Mantra purifies speech and thought. Repetition creates a calm, focused mind fit for seva and dharma
  • Samuhik Pooja multiplies sankalp shakti because many hearts pray together for sarvabhutahita, the welfare of all

What happens in a Rudrabhishek

  1. Sankalp and Guru Vandana
  2. Ganapati and Guru mantra for mangal aarambh
  3. Abhishek on the Shivling with jal, panchamrit, and dravya while chanting Vedic mantras
  4. Bilva archana, aarti, and shanti path
  5. Maha Prasad and bhajan satsang with the community

All pooja thali and samagri are usually arranged by the organisers. You may bring a small cloth for sitting and your devotion.

1. पंचाक्षरी मंत्र
ॐ नमः शिवाय

2. महामृत्युंजय मंत्र
ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम् ।
उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान् मृत्योर्मुक्षीय माऽमृतात् ॥

3. रुद्राष्टक (आरम्भ पंक्तियाँ)
नमामीशमीशान निरवानरूपम् ।
विभुं व्यापकं ब्रह्म वेदस्वरूपम् ॥

4. शान्ति मंत्र
ॐ द्यौः शान्तिरन्तरिक्षं शान्तिः । पृथ्वी शान्तिरापः शान्तिरोषधयः शान्तिः ।
वनस्पतयः शान्तिर्विश्वेदेवाः शान्तिर्ब्रह्म शान्तिः । सर्वं शान्तिः शान्तिरेव शान्तिः सा मा शान्तिरेधि ॥
ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः ॥

5. भिल्वाष्टक से एक श्लोक
त्रिदलं त्रिगुणाकारं त्रिनेत्रं च त्रयायुधम् ।
त्रिजन्मपापसंहारं एकदन्तं नमाम्यहम् ॥

यदि आप शुरुआती हैं तो “ॐ नमः शिवाय” और “महामृत्युंजय मंत्र” का विनम्र जप ही पर्याप्त है
