Ticket: C&R Communities and Residents
Electorate: Puketāpapa Local Board
Preferred name on ballot: Bala Venu Beeram

Who is Bala Venu Beeram

Bala is a long-time Puketāpapa resident. He holds a Master of Science in Chemistry and has more than 28 years of professional experience, including eight years as a teacher and 20 years at AsureQuality in Lynfield, where he currently works as a Scientist and has held several science related roles. Alongside his day job, he has organised blood drives, tree planting days, sports and cultural events, and charity fundraisers. He is the former President of the New Zealand Telugu Association and currently serves on the Business Committee of the New Zealand Indian Central Association.

In his words:
“My vision is a strong, safe and inclusive Puketāpapa where every voice is heard. I bring people skills, leadership and deep community spirit to this role.”

Why he is standing

Bala says he cares deeply about issues that affect families in the Puketāpapa and Mt Roskill area. He wants prudent spending, fair outcomes for ratepayers and a focus on connected, vibrant neighbourhoods. He frames his approach as collaborative and service driven, with an emphasis on listening and acting.

Top three priorities

  1. Keep rates low and deliver a fair deal for ratepayers
  2. Common sense transport solutions to ease congestion
  3. Lift safety so people feel secure at home, at work and at play

My position on key topics – expanded plan

Transport

My priority is a balanced, practical transport network that works for everyone. I will:

  • Push Auckland Transport for a 100 day safety audit of high risk crossings and intersections on Dominion Road, Mt Albert Road, Stoddard Road, Hillsborough Road and around schools, then publish fixes with dates.
  • Back reliable buses with peak time priority where it makes sense, more shelters and real time screens at Mt Roskill stops and in the town centre.
  • Close the missing links to the Southwestern Shared Path with safe bike and scooter connections on Stoddard Road and to Keith Hay Park.
  • Set a pothole and footpath repair target time with monthly reporting so people can see progress.

Water

Auckland’s water must be managed responsibly to ensure long term supply, high quality and environmental protection. I will:

  • Prioritise flood resilience in the Te Auaunga Oakley Creek catchment with upgraded stormwater pipes, litter traps and regular clearing of drains.
  • Back rain gardens, swales and tree pits in town centres to soak up stormwater, and promote home rain tank uptake through council partner discounts.
  • Support tighter monitoring to reduce wastewater overflows and publish a plain English flood hot spot map with planned fixes and timelines.
  • Keep services affordable and accountable with transparent performance dashboards.

Built environment

Growth should respect local character while delivering homes people can afford. I will:

  • Support well designed medium density near frequent bus routes and centres, with sunlight rules, green space, and safe walking access built in.
  • Require developer contributions to fund nearby parks, paths and community facilities so infrastructure keeps pace with housing.
  • Establish a local design review panel including community voices to lift quality and protect heritage where it matters.
  • Promote universal design so homes work for seniors and people with disabilities.

Natural environment

Protecting nature is essential for a healthy future. I will:

  • Plant and care for at least 10,000 native trees in this term, focusing on school grounds, parks and stream edges.
  • Expand pest control and riparian planting along Te Auaunga and the Waikōwhai coast, with regular community planting days.
  • Tackle pollution with smarter bins in parks, stormwater grate stencilling and education that reduces litter at the source.
  • Back local climate actions that cut emissions and make streets cooler, shadier and more walkable.

Community

Stronger communities are built on great places and inclusive programmes. I will:

  • Secure funding for upgraded play spaces and lighting at Keith Hay Park, War Memorial Park and key neighbourhood reserves.
  • Support extended weekend library hours during exam periods and quiet study zones for students.
  • Fund youth sport and arts programmes, and partner with providers for after school and holiday activities.
  • Improve safety with evidence based CCTV in problem locations, more community patrols, better lighting and a focus on prevention with youth services.

Economic and cultural development

Local business and culture go hand in hand. I will:

  • Launch a small business concierge to help traders navigate permits, signage and compliance in one place.
  • Back night markets, cultural festivals and pop ups in Mt Roskill to boost foot traffic and local pride.
  • Champion local procurement targets so more council spending goes to local, Māori and Pasifika owned firms.
  • Host skills and jobs fairs with employers and training providers to connect residents to work.

Well managed local government and outcomes for Māori

Good governance is the foundation for everything else. I will:

  • Partner with mana whenua and the Tūpuna Maunga Authority, uphold Te Tiriti o Waitangi and expand bilingual signage and te reo use in events and facilities.
  • Publish a clear quarterly budget and project tracker so people can see where every dollar goes.
  • Pilot participatory budgeting so residents can vote on a small part of the local spend.
  • Advocate for sustainable Port of Auckland operations that protect the environment and deliver fair returns to the region.
  • Keep storm recovery momentum with a pipeline of resilient projects and timely support for affected households.

Quick facts

First 100 days plan and detailed pledges on rates, safety and facilities: His focus is on listening to residents, pushing practical transport fixes and prioritising safety, while keeping a close eye on value for money.

Your vote, your neighbourhood

Local elections decide the people who set priorities for parks, paths, libraries, safety initiatives and town centres. Read the profiles, ask questions and return your ballot on time. If you have only 30 seconds, Bala asks you to remember that he is a long term resident who says he will listen, act and put the community first.
