Auckland will host the first State of Origin match ever played in New Zealand, with Game Two of the 2027 series confirmed for Wednesday, 16 June at Eden Park.
The historic rugby league clash between Queensland and New South Wales is expected to bring more than 10,000 Australian visitors across the Tasman and deliver an estimated $17.4 million economic boost. (The Beehive)
The fixture will be co-funded by the New Zealand Government through the Major Events Fund and Auckland Council Events through Tātaki Auckland Unlimited. (National Rugby League)
Historic first for New Zealand
State of Origin is one of the biggest events in Australian sport, built around the fierce rivalry between the Queensland Maroons and New South Wales Blues.
While Origin matches have previously been taken outside their traditional Queensland and New South Wales bases, the 2027 Auckland fixture will be the first official State of Origin match played on New Zealand soil. (National Rugby League)
Eden Park is expected to host around 50,000 fans, with strong interest anticipated from both sides of the Tasman. Auckland officials earlier estimated the event could generate more than 50,000 international visitor nights. (Auckland Unlimited)
Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston said confirming the date represented an important milestone for New Zealand’s major events programme.
She said hosting State of Origin offered an opportunity to attract international visitors, boost tourism and showcase New Zealand hospitality to a major overseas audience. (The Beehive)
$17.4 million expected economic impact
The Government says the event is expected to inject around $17.4 million into the economy, largely through spending by visiting supporters on accommodation, hospitality, transport, shopping and tourism activities. (The Beehive)
More than 10,000 visitors are expected to travel from Australia specifically for the event. (Auckland Unlimited)
For Auckland businesses, the commercial impact could stretch well beyond match night.
Hotels, restaurants, bars, transport operators, tourism businesses and retailers are likely to benefit from supporters staying in the city for several days.
Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown has previously said major sporting events such as State of Origin can bring full hotels and busy hospitality venues while introducing thousands of visitors to the wider Auckland region. (Auckland Unlimited)
Government backs event through Major Events Fund
The fixture is being supported by the Government’s Major Events Fund, alongside Auckland Council Events.
The Government has positioned major international events as one tool for increasing visitor spending and supporting economic activity.
Upston pointed to recent events including the NRL All Stars in Hamilton, the New Zealand Open and the Supercars Double Header as examples of events attracting domestic and international visitors. (The Beehive)
The Government says the NRL All Stars event in Hamilton attracted more than 10,680 domestic and international visitors and generated more than 7,000 visitor nights. (The Beehive)
The State of Origin fixture represents a significantly larger opportunity because of the scale and profile of the annual Queensland versus New South Wales rivalry.
A full week of rugby league planned
The NRL is planning more than just the Wednesday night Origin match.
Australian Rugby League Commission chairman Peter V’landys said organisers are preparing a week of rugby league activity in Auckland, beginning with a Warriors match at Eden Park on the Sunday before State of Origin. (National Rugby League)
That could encourage Australian supporters to extend their stays, creating additional visitor spending across the city.
The NRL has already opened official travel and hospitality packages for the Auckland fixture.
General public tickets are scheduled to go on sale in November 2026, with supporters able to join a ticket waitlist beforehand. (National Rugby League)
Auckland strengthens its major events ambitions
Securing State of Origin follows around three years of discussions involving Auckland, the NRL and the Australian Rugby League Commission. (Auckland Unlimited)
The match will also give Eden Park another internationally televised sporting event involving a substantial overseas audience.
However, major event funding remains part of a wider debate over who should ultimately pay for Auckland to attract international events.
Brown has previously argued that a visitor levy could help fund major events instead of relying as heavily on Auckland ratepayers and taxpayers. (Auckland Unlimited)
That debate does not change the immediate significance of the announcement.
For rugby league supporters, 16 June 2027 is now locked in as a landmark date.
For Auckland’s tourism and hospitality sectors, the bigger question will be whether the city can turn one night of elite sport into several days of economic activity.
With tens of thousands of fans expected at Eden Park and more than 10,000 Australians forecast to travel across the Tasman, State of Origin 2027 could become one of Auckland’s biggest international sporting weekends in years.
