Bollywood fans in New Zealand are in for a treat this November. The golden voice of Shabbir Kumar, one of the most loved playback singers of the 1980s and 1990s, will echo through Auckland as he performs live on 15 November 2025 at the Netball Auditorium in Manurewa.

A Voice That Defined an Era

Shabbir Kumar was born in Vadodara, Gujarat, and grew up with a natural love for music. His singing journey began with small performances, but his real break came in the early 1980s when music director Usha Khanna gave him his first chance in the film Tajurba (1981).

Soon after, his life changed completely when filmmaker Manmohan Desai and the famous composer duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal discovered his unique voice. They chose him to sing for Coolie (1983), including the beautiful track Mubarak Ho Tum Sabko Haj Ka Mahina.

From that moment, Shabbir Kumar became one of Bollywood’s most recognized voices. He sang for some of the biggest stars and worked with legends like R. D. Burman, Lata Mangeshkar, and Kishore Kumar. His songs from films such as Betaab, Prem Tapasya, Coolie, Aaj Ka Arjun, and Ghayal are still loved by fans today.

Tunes like Shaam Hai Ye Kuch Khoyi Khoyi, Sochna Kya, and Gori Hai Kalaiyan continue to bring back memories of Bollywood’s golden years.

In a career spanning more than forty years, Shabbir Kumar has recorded over six thousand songs in many languages, including Hindi, Urdu, Marathi, Bhojpuri, and Gujarati. He has received several awards, such as Gold and Platinum Discs, the Kala Ratan Award, and the Mohammed Rafi Award. His voice still carries the same warmth and charm that made him one of the most loved singers in Indian cinema.
