Introduction
New Zealand Customs has stopped five drug couriers at Auckland Airport in only eight days. Officers seized 51 kilograms of methamphetamine, worth about 15.2 million dollars, along with a small amount of cocaine. These quick actions prevented a large amount of harmful drugs from entering New Zealand communities.

Three Major Seizures in Just Over a Week
Customs carried out three different interceptions between 2 and 10 November. In each case, officers noticed unusual luggage and acted fast.
Seizure on 10 November
To start the week, a 32-year-old United States traveller arrived from San Francisco. Customs officers checked two of his suitcases and found 36 vacuum-sealed packages holding 19 kilograms of methamphetamine. This amount has a street value of up to 5.7 million dollars.
In addition, officers found a small vial holding three grams of cocaine in the passenger’s handbag.
Seizure on 9 November
The day before, a 69-year-old French national arrived from South Africa via Hong Kong. During a luggage check, officers found a book titled Apologize, Forgive, Forget. However, the book was actually a wooden box. Inside it, they discovered almost two kilograms of methamphetamine, worth up to 594,300 dollars.
Seizure on 2 November

A week earlier, three United States nationals arrived on a flight from Los Angeles. Officers searched two suitcases belonging to one passenger and located 11 vacuum-sealed packages. These packages held nearly 30 kilograms of methamphetamine, worth about 8.9 million dollars.
The other two travellers were also arrested because they were linked to the smuggling attempt.
Record-Breaking Year for Auckland Airport
According to Customs Auckland Airport Manager Paul Williams, 2025 has already been a record year. So far, officers have seized about 670 kilograms of methamphetamine and cocaine from passengers and unaccompanied luggage.
Williams says criminal groups continue to target New Zealand because the profits are high. He also says Customs will stay alert as the busy summer season approaches.
Why This Matters
These large seizures show how hard organised crime groups are working to bring drugs into New Zealand. They also show how important border checks are for keeping communities safe. Every interception stops millions of dollars of illegal drugs from reaching the streets.
